PSSA - Pennsylvania System of School Assessment
The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment test (PSSA) is administered to determine whether standards set by the government are being met by students in Pennsylvania classrooms. This assessment is given in the Spring. Third grade students will be assessed in the areas of math and reading and writing. You will receive your child’s results in fourth grade.
DRA – Diagnostic Reading Assessment - may be used (optional)
Given throughout the school year to assess students reading ability. Students are given both fiction and non-fiction passages to read and answer questions about. Teachers use the results to identify the student’s reading level, strengths & weaknesses, and plan for instruction.
Reading Unit Benchmarks
The Journey's program has end of unit assessments. They are common assessments meaning that all third graders in all PASD elementary schools will take the same assessment at the conclusion of units 1 - 5 (after every five lessons).
Core Phonics
Assesses a child's phonics skills.
CDT - Classroom Diagnostic Tools
The CDT is a diagnostic assessment based on content assessed by the PSSA - test items are created to align to the PA Core. It is composed of multiple-choice items: 48-60 items per assessment.
District Writing Assessments
Students are given writing assessments at different times throughout the school year to assess students writing ability. They are given a topic and asked to write to this topic/genre. The assessment is then scored with a rubric. The results are used to identify the student’s writing ability, strengths & weaknesses, show growth, and to set individual goals as well as to plan for instruction.
Math Unit Benchmarks
The Go Math! program has built in assessments. The students will take a mid-chapter and benchmark end of unit (cumulative) assessment. These assessments were developed over last year and throughout the summer. They are common assessments meaning that all third graders in all PASD elementary schools will take the same assessment at the conclusion of each unit.
REPORT CARDS
*Note- In 3rd grade we have a standards based report card which will include percentages and letter grades, which will be discussed at Back-to-School Night.
